Marcus is a Lawyer, Patent Agent, and Trademark Agent with over 35 years experience in Canadian intellectual property law. He has advised clients on the protection and commercialization of intellectual property rights, with a particular expertise in mechanical and electromechanical technologies.  In addition to assisting both domestic and international clients with prosecution before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, he has appeared before the Canadian Trademarks Opposition Board, Patent Appeal Board, as well as on various matters before the Federal Court of Canada (Trial and Appeal Divisions).

In addition to a B.Sc., M.Sc. and LL.B., Marcus holds an LL.M in eCommerce.  He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Patent Reporter from 2008 to 2025, and has contributed to numerous publications on topics such as Industrial Designs, Patent Claim Construction, and Canadian IP law.  He also served on the Canadian Patent Agents Examination Board and has assisted its successor, CPATA, with examination standards setting.

Prior to joining Kirby IP Canada, Marcus was the Ottawa Managing Partner of Ridout & Maybee LLP.
